Facebook to open second European datacentre in Ireland

Social media giant, Facebook has confirmed that it is to build a new 31,000 sq m datacentre in Ireland.

Last October the company received approval for a datacentre in Co Meath after An Bord Pleanála rejected an appeal against the granting of planning permission for the facility,.

Tom Furlong, VP, Infrastructure announced in a blog post  that the “ Clonee data center will be our first in Ireland and follows Luleå, in Sweden, as our second in Europe. The facility will become part of the infrastructure that enables billions of people to connect with the people and things they care about on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and more.

Clonee will be packed full of cutting-edge technology, making it one of the most advanced, efficient and sustainable data centers in the world. All the racks, servers, and other components have been designed and built from scratch as part of the Open Compute Project, an industry-wide coalition of companies dedicated to creating energy- and cost-efficient infrastructure solutions and sharing them as open source.”

Furlong  continued “ Our datacentre in Clonee will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, thanks to Ireland’s robust wind resources. This will help us reach our goal of powering 50 percent of our infrastructure with clean and renewable energy by the end of 2018.

Ireland has been our international headquarters since 2009, and our new Clonee data center will continue Facebook’s significant investment in the country and in Europe.”
